I just love when a new brand makes it into a popular event, especially one with so much potential as Navy & Copper. If you’re not familiar with this brand, color HUDs include 30 color choices with basics/roots/tips/combination. Tones are available in blondes, brunettes, reds and grayscales. I would like to see some color choices- maybe some pastels or bolds added in the future, but overall, I do love the textures. Currently, you can find their hair in Shiny Shabby and faMESHed, but do stop by the mainstore for more, as well as a group gift (free to join!) and discounts for joining.
On a side note- is it me or are the availability of photogenic sims for bloggers really dwindling these days? If you’ve got any interesting SLURLs to share, please let me know!
With that being said, I was scouring my inventory for a backdrop to use when I stumbled across an oldie but goodie in Milk Motions June 2017 Arcade release (previously blogged here.) Though I really wanted to use this piece, my parcel is just plum out of prims, so I donned my dark sunglasses, checked both ways and crossed the street on over to Backdrop City.
In the passed few weeks, the drama has been real over creators and event coordinators boycotting Backdrop city for multiple reasons. We’ve all got differing opinions when it comes to content, purchasing rights and the use of items we own in SL- yet nevertheless, the concept of this sim has in fact been around for quite some time. So why only now has it become an issue?
I do think that if the pieces are appropriately credited, then it is basically free advertising for creators. On the other hand, I definitely think the keepers of Backdrop City, out of respect for creators and events, should wait until an event is over before offering them ‘free to use’ for the public. Whether or not that is already happening though, I am not sure. (Insight anyone?)
As for me, while I prefer to own the backdrops I use for editing purposes, I do like the place as it offers quite a lot for bloggers and residents to use and it did give me some ideas for backdrops that I will definitely go out and purchase on my own.
From what I saw when I first visited, the group is free to join and no profit is being made from the use of these backdrops. There is a sim tip jar, however, and obviously if you are using the place it wouldn’t hurt to help support the upkeep. Sim costs don’t just grow on trees, you know. Whether or not tipping might be considered profit is up for debate, I’m sure.
All in all, I’ve certainly heard some good feedback from both sides. Arguments that Backdrop City is taking a bite out of creators’ profits by offering their items for free use, yet at the same time hearing that it isn’t much different than people reselling gachas for a cheaper (or higher/profitable) price. Or, in visiting just about a sim and taking pictures with anything but Linden plants in the background. Same difference, no?
What are your thoughts on Backdrop City, or the controversy surrounding free to use backgrounds for the community?
Meanwhile, I will just be over there, sipping my Lipton with Kermit the Frog.
